4 stars (students should think first before buying it) - This product works very good, as advertised. However, I bought it in hope to use it for my classes. I was using it with Sony ICD-P210 Voice Recorder. Unfortunately, it doesn't work if you record from your desk, even if you sit very close to the teacher (I've tried both Standard and High Quality recording). So if you want to use this program to recognize your teacher's speech, you will have to ask him to wear a microphone, and to hold your recorder in his pocket, and not to move a lot. For most of my teachers, it is not acceptable. Good luck! 4 stars (Memory Hog) - This is a great product. I bought because I am working full-time and going to grad school at night. I have significantly reduced the time required to produce cousework. Comments: 1) I have 1.12 GB of RAM, about 6 paragraphs of dictation kills the memory. I tried using it with 256 MB of RAM and immediately upgraded. 2) Be patient. The software gets better at recognizing your voice. I have found after about 6 paragraphs of dictation it does not recognize my voice as well. Other then that, it's truely amazing. If you were wondering, I am currently typing this out. I was writing a paper and killed the memory with Dragon. Presenting With Pizzazz

2 stars (Very basic stuff and NO PIZAZZ at all...) - I was very disappointed with this book. I am a speaker and this book will not help me much. The basic message of the book: the audience must be involved so it learns. No kidding!? This book was "presenting with pizazz" and NOT "tricks to become a better trainer"!!! The title is completely misleading, since I didn't learn how to add any creativity, showbiz or "pizazz" to my presentations! In fact, being known for my surprising presentations, I will really think about writing this book myself, as it was meant to be. I do not recommend this book since it contains only minimal content. 4 stars (Great Tips!) - Almost every book on presentation commanded at least a few hundred pages of text, so you could imagine my sceptism when I bought this book. I am glad to say that I have not regretted this purchase. :) You realise that this book is a no-nonsense, straight to the point tip book, the moment you flip to the content page. The elaborations are concise and punchy. You don't have to mull through numerous pages of boring academia but you get very useful tips. Sharon Bowman is quite obviously an old hand at training. What I also loved were the punchy and witty little words of wisdom that Sharon Bowman boxed up in various parts of the book. It made lots of common sense when you read them, and of course, served to tickle your funny bones. My only reservation about this book is that while the tips are great, its suggested games/pair shares do not seem very useful for most situations - to some extent, these pair shares can seem rather common and boring. Nevertheless, I would take this with a pinch of salt, and rather use these suggested games/pair shares not as the hard and fast model answers, nor as templates, but more as suggested examples. Mastering Public Speaking- Fifth Edition

1 stars (Disappointing) - I'd considered buying this book from Amazon, and decided to first examine a copy at the Boston Public Library. I was unimpressed. The tone seems aimed at middle-school students, and the text is littered with patronizing "Dick & Jane" anecdotes. A quick glance through the table of contents suggests that Grice and Skinner address nearly every conceivable aspect of public speaking -- but a closer examination reveals a complete lack of depth. It seems as if they simply brainstormed ways to add pages without actually investigating their subject. The most derelict example I found was the second chapter, devoted entirely to a discussion of ethics. This chapter includes a section on plagiarism, where Grice and Skinner define plagiarism and warn students that getting caught may result in failing a class or being expelled from school -- hardly the sort of information you'd expect from a college-level textbook. Meanwhile, Grice and Skinner lazily sidestep the most challenging issue -- the employment of speechwriters -- by confining its mention to a brief, rhetorical question among the chapter-end exercises. In other words: "Here's a complex issue. We've exhausted our space with rudimentary ones, but we encourage you to do some real work on your own!" There are some informative, useful books on public speaking. Richard Dowis and James Humes have each written excellent books on crafting and delivering a speech. Virgil Anderson and Ann Utterback have written valuable books on training your voice, and Livingston Taylor and Keith Johnstone have written classics on stage performance. My suggestion is to skip this book. I was thoroughly disappointed with its lack of ambition, and I'd hate to be stuck with a professor who found it respectable. ...

5 stars (FINALLY, Someone who can teach public speaking!) - As a college instructor of oral communication for ten years, I complained bitterly about the poor selection of books for beginning students--until now. This is the single best book of its kind on the market, bar none. In all my years, I've never had students brag on a book like this one: easy to read, well-organized, thoughtful, practical, visually attractive, and substantive. My best compliment is that I can teach three times the material in half the time just by using this text--and people understand it! I can't brag enough on the author's work. This is phenomenal. I had versions of Dragon software, dating back to 1995. Let me tell you the software was clunky back then, being a quadriplegic, I used it to type and move the mouse. But as soon as I got a touchpad mouse. I dropped Dragon altogether. Step forward almost 10 years, I decided that I needed to send longer e-mails than two sentences (because that's all I could type, it gets tiring using only one hand and one knuckle on that hand). So I took the plunge drop the cash on Dragon, and after three days am totally satisfied. I added up and running and dictating in less than 20 minutes. The accuracy is amazing I'm actually typing this by voice. Since I can use a touchpad, I do not use the Dragon NaturallySpeaking for mouse commands. But for dictating it is perfect and quick!!! I'm using it with a 2 GHz processor, and it is fine. Getting it set up was a little quirky with my Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS. I'm actually using it with a tabletop condenser microphone, not the heads that they came with it (which I found to be quite uncomfortable). Since I'm unable to get the headset on my head, but a tabletop mike is working perfect. So I recommend this product anyone who has a disability that makes typing difficult. Anybody who doesn't want to learn to type (though I think he would be lazy, just suck it up and learn). The software is leaps and bounds above previous versions go for it! Enjoy! ...

5 stars (Finally speech recognition that works) - Dragon NaturallySpeaking 8 is not perfect, but I believe it is as close as possible with today's technology. In fact, upgrading your hardware may be the best way to improve the performance. It happily eats up all the processing power I throw at it, and then some. But the result is better dictation that some office workers could have taken. It misunderstands from time to time, but at least it can spell even long and unusual words. The included headset is of poor quality and should be replaced as soon as possible. This has been the case all the way from version 5 when I first bought it. I have no idea why they would ruin their own reputation to pinch a few pennies like that. It would have been wiser to ship it without hardware at all: This is really a software product, after all. Personally I use a USB headset from Plantronics with very good results. It also works well with a common vocal performance microphone. I have a small problem with the recorder being slightly below what I wanted but the product proved it's worth OVER AND OVER AGAIN! I was able to record lectures and have my computer do all the translation! What an amazing product! It helped me in ways that I cannot explain! I looked on Scansoft's website WWW.SCANSOFT.COM and upgrade to a compatible recorder that was much higher quality. This product is defintely worth the $200 I spent on it. The recorder is great for the first couple classes! It got me thru some serious lectures that I was able to download to my Mp3 and listen to while I worked out! Saves me more time than any other software program out there!
